What is Nuvia Sweetener?

Nuvia Sweetener is a low-calorie sugar replacement created from the pure extract of the naturally sweet stevia plant. Our signature, great-tasting sweetener can be easily used in all types of cooking and complements the natural flavours in tea and coffee. Nuvia Sweetener is made in Australia using two naturally derived ingredients — stevia and erythritol.

What exactly is stevia?

Stevia is a plant which is part of the sunflower family originally from South America. It was discovered over 200 years ago in Paraguay where natives used the leaves to sweeten tea. Stevia was first extracted for commercial use in Japan in the 1970s and has grown in popularity ever since. It is now used around the world to sweeten condiments, dairy products, hot and cold drinks, to flavour baked goods and in cooking. Today it is sourced predominantly from Kenya, China and South America.

While the word “stevia” refers to the entire plant, the sweet components are isolated and purified from the stevia leaves. The highest quality and best tasting part of the leaves are known as steviol glycosides and they are the only part of the leaves we use in Nuvia Sweetener. Stevia leaf extracts are removed from the leaves of the stevia plant by traditional extraction methods which do not alter the composition of the plant’s sweet compounds. To extract the sweetness from the leaves, the stevia leaves are harvested, dried, then steeped in hot water. The result is a liquid extract that is filtered, purified and then dried again. The result is a white stevia leaf extract powder.

Stevia contains no calories and is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar, so only a tiny amount is required to obtain the sweetness of sugar.

Growing stevia requires less water, energy and land compared to other crops such as sugarcane. Stevia’s carbon footprint is also 55% lower than beet sugar and 29% lower than cane sugar, making it a more sustainable sugar alternative.

We source high-quality stevia which has a clean, sugar-like taste.

And erythritol?

Erythritol is a naturally-derived, plant-based sweetener and sugar alcohol containing 60% to 80% of the sweetness of sucrose (sugar). Sugar alcohols are not to be confused with artificial sweeteners as they occur naturally in plants, including fruits and vegetables. To provide a healthy product that can be used as a sugar alternative, we needed to bring in another plant-based ingredient to carry the natural sweetness of stevia extract. Due to the ingredient profile and sweetness level of erythritol, it’s the perfect binding ingredient to produce a versatile, sugar-free, chemical-free and fructose-free sweetener and sugar replacement.

It has added benefits of being heat stable up to 160°C, non-caloric and is the easiest sugar alcohol to digest – with more than 90% absorbed in the small intestine. Erythritol differs from other sugar alcohols as it contains no calories and does not cause tooth decay, making Nuvia Sweetener a ‘tooth-friendly’ product.

Erythritol also ranks zero on the glycaemic index, whereas sucrose (sugar) has a glycaemic index (GI) of 65 and glucose has a GI of 100. This means that erythritol does not impact blood sugar levels nor does it cause insulin spikes, making it a suitable sweetener for diabetics and people looking to lower their insulin levels.*

How is Nuvia different from other sweeteners?

Unlike other sweeteners, Nuvia Sweetener is naturally derived and free from all flavourings, colourings, preservatives, additives and genetically-modified ingredients. Our team carefully select the highest quality stevia leaf extract to create Nuvia Sweetener which has a unique, clean taste and the same flavour profile as sugar. Nuvia Sweetener contains a carefully chosen combination of steviol glycosides that optimise the overall taste performance due to each steviol glycoside having a unique sweetness and performance attribute.

Are the steviol glycosides (stevia extract) in the stevia leaf different to when they are extract in the final product?

Nuvia Sweetener is made with a stevia extract that has an identical molecule structure to that found in the original leaf. The entire extraction process is designed to isolate the best tasting, most useable steviol glycosides, to create a pure stevia extract that is equal in structure, sweetness and composition to the extract in the natural stevia plant leaf. We then purify our leaf extract in a similar way to other plant-based sweeteners such as sugar cane. The stevia compound remains intact and unchanged throughout the process.

How exactly does Nuvia Sweetener affect the body? What are the side effects?

There are no known side effects or allergies from the use of stevia extracts in foods and beverages making it suitable for all. The safety of stevia extracts has been extensively reviewed and scientifically proven by numerous international organizations such as the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) which is administered jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Apart from providing a delicious, natural sweet fix, stevia has little effect on the body. It has been proven to be poorly absorbed by the body which is why it has almost zero calories, zero carbohydrates and no pharmacological effect on blood glucose levels, making stevia a suitable option for diabetics.*

Can Nuvia Sweetener be used as part of a weight management diet?

It’s a chemical-free, sugar (sucrose) alternative that can be incorporated into a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle. Research has shown stevia to be a useful aid in curbing sugar habits and reducing calorie intake as it provides a sweet fix without the calories or carbohydrates of sugar and doesn’t cause an increase in appetite or sugar cravings.* Each 1.5 g stick of Nuvia Sweetener contains just 0.4 calories in comparison to one teaspoon of white sugar containing 16 calories. However, like everything, it should be consumed in moderation.

*We recommend consulting your GP or seeking medical advice to confirm Nuvia is suitable for you.

Is Nuvia Sweetener safe for diabetics? Does it affect blood sugar levels?

Yes, if you are diabetic, or are looking to lower your insulin levels*, research has shown that stevia extracts do not affect blood glucose levels or interfere with insulin. With effectively zero calories, stevia extracts offer people with diabetes greater variety and flexibility in managing total calorie intake and assisting with weight management.
